The European Super Cup was created by a Dutch journalist Anton Witkamp in the early 70s when total Dutch football was dominating in Europe with Feyenoord and Ajax winning the Champions League for four years Feyenoord in 1970 and Ajax for three times in a row in 1971, 1972, 1973.
He proposed that to decide the best team on the continent a final had to be played between the winner of the Champions League (at the time the Champions Cup) and the winners of the other UEFA tournament the Europa League (at that time the other tournament was the Cup of the Cups)
The first final of the European Super Cup was played in 1972 between Ajax and Rengers with two return matches won by the Dutch 6-3. However, this final was never officially recognized by UEFA, as UEFA had banned Rengers from all European competitions due to their fans and their aggressive behavior during the Cup Winners’ Cup final.
The first official final was played next year in 1973 between Ajax and Milan, who won 6-1 on aggregate. Until 1997, the Super Cup was played in two round trips. Since 1998, the final has been played on a neutral venue in a single match.
The teams that have won the European Super Cup most times are AC Milan, Barcelona and Real Madrid five times.
In the years 1974, 1981 and 1985 the Super Cup was not held for various reasons, where the teams could not find space to play the final in August or could not find a date for each other.
The latest winners of the European Super Cup 2023 is Manchester City, winning it for the first time.
